Purpose of the tool
QuiltBackingTally estimates backing yardage for equal full-width panels and optional straight-cut binding from a separate fabric. It compares orientations, accounts for stated seam losses and rounds purchase length upward. It is a planning aid rather than a fabric inspection or a full sewing instruction service.
Your measurements and responsibilities
Check actual top dimensions, usable widths after preparation, print direction, seam allowances and your quilter’s requirements. Confirm the assembled back before trimming. A percentage buffer adds length only; it does not correct width shrinkage, match patterns or make a rejected orientation acceptable.
Excluded layouts and materials
The tool does not optimize decorative inserts, scrap backs, offcut reuse, bias binding or pattern matching. The diagram is schematic and is not a full-size cutting template. Software input limits are not material recommendations. Actual cloth may vary from the entered assumptions.
Availability and accuracy
The site may change, be maintained or become unavailable. We aim to explain the calculations clearly but do not guarantee completeness, uninterrupted availability or suitability for every project.
